The New Hollywood Squares is the third Hollywood Squares television series. The program aired between September 15, 1986 and June 16, 1989. It was produced by Century Towers Television with Rick Rosner serving as executive producer and Orion Television as distributor. After the first season, became known simply as "Hollywood Squares."

Hollywood Squares is an American panel game show, in which two contestants play tic-tac-toe to win cash and prizes. The "board" for the game is a 3 × 3 vertical stack of open-faced cubes, each occupied by a celebrity seated at a desk and facing the contestants. The stars are asked questions by the host, or "Square-Master", and the contestants judge the veracity of their answers in order to win the game.Although Hollywood Squares was a legitimate game show, the game largely acted as the background for the show's comedy in the form of joke answers, often given by the stars prior to their "real" answer. The show's writers usually supplied the jokes. In addition, the stars were given question subjects and plausible incorrect answers prior to the show. The show was scripted in this sense, but the gameplay was not. In any case, as host Peter Marshall, the best-known "Square-Master" and the man in whose honor the show's first announcer, Kenny Williams, actually "coined" the term, would explain at the beginning of the Secret Square game, the celebrities were briefed prior to show to help them with bluff answers, but they otherwise heard the actual questions for the first time as they were asked on air.

On September 14, 1998, a Hollywood Squares revival debuted with Tom Bergeron as its host. In addition to her production duties, Whoopi Goldberg served as the permanent center square, with series head writer Bruce Vilanch, Gilbert Gottfried, Martin Mull, and Caroline Rhea as regular panelists and Brad Garrett, Bobcat Goldthwait, Jeffrey Tambor, George Wallace, Kathy Griffin and various others as semi-regular panelists. Shadoe Stevens returned to announce, although he was not given a square on the panel as he had been when John Davidson was host.

An hour-long combo of two classic quiz shows, hosted by Gene Rayburn and Jon Bauman. In the Match Game half, a group of celebrities would be given a sentence with a missing word, which they would then have to fill in. The contestants would then give their own answer, and scored points according to how many celebrities gave the same answer. In the Hollywood Squares half, the celebrities, seated in squares in a tic-tac-toe arrangement, would give their answers to questions on various subjects. The contestants would then have to guess whether or not a celebrity's answer was right. Contestants guessing correctly would gain control of the square. Gaining control of three squares in a row would win the game.

"Storybook Squares" was the Saturday morning children's version of the popular daytime (and at one point, prime-time) game show, featuring celebrity ad-libs and tic-tac-toe. Two children aged 7 to 10, one competing as X and the other O competed for an entire show; the nine celebrities were dressed as famous historical (e.g., Paul Revere), literature (e.g., Robinson Crusoe) or characters from popular TV shows (e.g., Capt. James T. Kirk of "Star Trek"). The game rules were identical to the daily show (i.e., host Marshall reads a chosen celebrity a question, celebrity quip, agree or disagree). Each game was worth a $100 savings bond, which matured on the child's 18th birthday, plus a prize (e.g., a color television set, dance lessons). The child winning the most games at the end of the show won a larger prize (e.g., a family trip to Grand Canyon); however, even the child who lost was guaranteed a $100 savings bond and a prize.
